Mama Fresh is a successful family business with Hailu Tessema as the founder his wife Konjit (and the “Mama” of Mama Fresh!) son Miraf and numerous support staff. The family has a singular vision – “to make the world fall in love with Ethiopian cuisine”.

Well, it seems as if they are well on their way! Their wide repertoire of spices in addition to Injera will soon be available in Chicago and Minneapolis to add to their huge list of Ethiopian restaurant clients all over Ethiopia (courtesy of daily Ethiopian Airlines flights getting them to the mainland from Addis). In addition to the wide market in the USA, Mama Injera also exports to Sweden, Norway, Germany, Hong Kong, Kuwait and Nigeria! We all know the rise of global popularity and fame the humble grain of Teff has attracted, now that the world has discovered its gluten free and highly nutritious properties. It is equally satisfying to see that Teff is being positively exploited from its country of origin.

The Mama Fresh team has been baking injera daily in Ethiopia since 2003. Mama Fresh also exports Teff Flour to the USA (the teff is sourced from commercial teff farmers in Ethiopia with 100 percent traceability and quality). The hundreds of smallholder farmers who grow teff and spices for Mama Fresh as well as the chefs and bakers who create the products at Mama Fresh are vital components of the success of the business. More than 90 hardworking men and women are employed in the kitchens and bakeries of Mama Fresh.

In 2015 Mama Fresh plc, was recognized by the Addis Ababa Ministry of Urban Development, Housing and Construction as the Number One Micro and Small Enterprise Exporter in the country. Founder HailuTessema was presented the award at a national recognition and award ceremony. Mama Fresh has also received commendations from the likes of CNN, BBC, Deutsche Welle and African Development Successes. Investment from Renew’s Impact Angel Network investor funding ( has been instrumental in the global expansion of Mama Fresh.

In addition to products, Mama Fresh has also opened an innovative Teff and Injera Learning Center at its export facility in Addis, where visitors are able to experience the various stages of Injera production – from teff grain and flour to the dough and baking. Visitors can even compete and participate in baking some injera. And of course purchase Injera and Spices in the Center.
